TN: 600 mechanised fishing boats take to sea at Kasimedu harbour after 61-day break

At least 600 mechanised fishing boats took to sea at Kasimedu harbour after the 61-day trawling ban came to an end. Fish prices are likely to drop by 50% in a week when the boats return to shore with their catch. Meanwhile, about 1,500 small fishing boats, built of fibre-reinforced plastic, were already out in the sea as they were not subject to the two-month ban called by the state fisheries department to encourage fish breeding. Fish prices rose two months ago when the supply dwindled at Kasimedu harbour due to the deep sea fishing ban.
